Mystics run out of magic against Fever
Issue date: 9/27/09 Section: For Your Entertainment
In their first playoff series since 2006, the Mystics fell to the no. 1 ranked Indiana Fever in back to back games. Hampered by a left ankle injury, All Star Alana Beard managed only 9 points and 3 boards a losing effort at the Comcast Center at the University of Maryland. Even with Monique Curry smothering Fever Forward Tamika Catchings for most of the match up, the all-star and potential MVP turned in stellar performance finishing with 26 and 12 rebounds.
The Fever outpaced the Mystics in the fourth quarter taking the lead on a Katy Douglas three. The Mystics would lost the hard fought contest 88-79.
The Mystics traveled to the Fever's Conseco Fieldhouse on Saturday for game 2. The Mystics played their hearts out for forty minutes and were on the verge of forcing a game 3 when Tamika Catchings was fouled with less than 3 ticks on the clock. Catchings sunk both free throws sending the game into overtime.
Although Catchings recorded game highs with 24 points and 16 boards and all star defense, once again it was a poor shooting performance in the fourth that sealed the Mystics fate. Only the 2009 WNBA most Forward Crystal Langhorne was the only Washington player to score a field goal in the fourth quarter. The Mystics lost in overtime 81-74.
The Mystics look to build on this year's playoff berth setting higher goals for the 2010 season.
