The District has sold a 16.1 acre site at DC Village to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) for $6.45 million to replace the former M Street, SW bus garage which closed earlier this year, according to the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development.

"The project will not only bring much needed job opportunities East of the River, it will provide significant resources to help us off set our current budget gap," said Deputy Mayor Valerie Santos.

WMATA plans to build a $90 million facility to house 114 buses to serve the Washington regions. The site is large enough to be expanded to house up to 250 buses.

WMATA sold its former bus garage at Half and M Streets SE to a private development entity that will build a mixed-use project next to Nationals Park and the Navy Yard Metrorail Station.
