District of Columbia: Lee Smith tapped to lead D.C. small business development office

Lee A. Smith III joins the Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD) as Interim Director. Smith is an accomplished public servant and an experienced operations and government relations professional with in-depth knowledge of the policies and procedures of both the executive and legislative branches of District government.

"I am very excited to become part of DSLBD. I am looking forward to continuing the agency's commitment to comprehensively and efficiently serving the city's small business community," said Smith.

Prior to his appointment at DSLBD, Smith served as the director of administration and government affairs for the Washington Convention Center Authority, where he provided overall direction and coordination of the Authority's human resources, contracting and procurement, and business services departments. Smith, a Ward 7 resident, previously served as chief of staff for the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission, directing senior staff, managing the daily operations of the Commission, and assisting the CEO in overseeing the on-time completion of Washington Nationals Ballpark within the mandated cost cap. He was legislative director and counsel for the Office of Councilmember Carol Schwartz, where he developed and implemented Schwartz's legislative agenda and strategy and served as the councilmember's primary public liaison and spokesperson. He hold a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and a Juris Doctorate from Howard University.
