With the beginning of the new school year, WHUR 96.3 FM - Howard University teamed up with the Steve Harvey Foundation to host a benefit golf tournament at Atlantic Golf at South River in Edgewater, Maryland. Monies raised from the tournament will be used to purchase needed school supplies for Washington area youth.

It is estimated that thousands of area youth will head back to classes later this month without the tools they need to succeed. Funds raised from today's tournament will go to buy computers, chalkboards, projectors, book bags, paper, pencils, and other supplies for regional schools and students.

Heard weekdays from 6am to 10am on WHUR, Harvey has been sponsoring golf tournaments in various cities across the country since 2002, raising nearly $250,000 to help support schools and youth nationwide. "This is a perfect fit for us. The mission of the Steve Harvey Foundation is right in line with what WHUR strives to do daily, giving back to our community. The golf tournament will help put educational tools in the hands of our young people just in time for the start of the 2008/2009 school year," said WHUR General Manager Jim Watkins.
