District of Columbia: Charter School hosts neo-soul fundraiser June 22 at Café Asia
Issue date: 6/22/08 Section: Neighborhood
One charter school is packing its boxes and readying to close down - but not as a result of a declining student population. In fact, it's the complete opposite. Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Charter School located in the diverse Mt. Pleasant area of northwest Washington, DC is moving to a larger campus in the northeast Brookland neighborhood and is hosting an elegant night of hors d'oeuvres and entertainment featuring neo-soul artist Troy "Sol" Elder on Sunday June 22, 2008 to help support the move.
Troy "Sol" Elder, a D.C. native raised in Prince George's County made a name for himself in D.C.'s open-mic scene doing a combination of spoken word and singing. His debut album, "Song of Solomon" explores old-school, 80s, hip-hop & neo-soul with an occasional splash of jazz for a truly loaded 11 song 14 track masterpiece. Elder will appear with special guest artist Douglas Jordan.
"We're truly excited to bring together our friends, parents and those that aren't yet connected to E.W. Stokes for this special evening," said Linda Moore, founder of the 10-year-old trilingual charter school.
Elsie Whitlow Stokes Charter School began as a small campus dedicated to immersing students in two languages. Students are privy to a team-teaching environment, learning every subject in English, and in French or Spanish for seven years. Starting in the fall at its new Brookland location, the school will open a preschool and pre-kindergarten.
"Parents are truly excited about the opportunity to expose their smaller ones to our curriculum and teaching style. Now we just need a lot of extra support from the community at large. Our goal is to raise $4M in capital campaign funds to take care of this monumental move."
Tickets to the fundraiser are $25 in advance, $35 at the door, and sponsorships are also available. Café Asia is located downtown at 1720 I Street, NW. For more information, contact Jo-Anne Hurlston at jo-anneh@ewstokes.org or 202.265.7237 x140.
