The Prince George's County Council adopted a $2.7 billion balanced budget for Fiscal Year 2009 which starts July 1,2008.
Council Chairman Samuel H. Dean (D) - District 6, praised the courage of his colleagues who made the difficult decisions to improve the quality of life for every Prince Georgian.
"Tough times test our character, strength and will," said Dean. "The FY '09 budget is a true testament to the character of leadership in Prince George's County and proves that we are sustained in good times and bad."
Despite a shortfall of more than $100 million, he said the budget continues to meet the critical needs of the County.
Dean and County Executive Jack Johnson have agreed to meet with budget professionals to discuss expenditures and revenues on a regular basis. Twenty million dollars of county appropriations for FY'09 have also been placed in a contingency fund for use on an as-needed basis.
In bi-county budget action earlier this month, Prince George's and Montgomery lawmakers unanimously adopted a total water and sewer operating budget of $482.2 million for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) for FY '09, agreeing to an eight-percent increase rather than the 11% proposed by WSSC. Both councils failed to support the utility's proposal for the $20 monthly flat fee for customers contained in the WSSC proposed budget.
