Prince George's: Healthcare workers endorse Adam Ortiz for Prince George's 5th District
Issue date: 3/23/08 Section: Neighborhood
1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, Maryland Division has endorsed Edmonston Mayor Adam Ortiz in the April 1 special election for the Prince George's County Council race in the Fifth District. The politically active Union recently endorsed and gave critical support to Donna Edwards in her historic win over 16-year incumbent Albert Wynn to become the Democratic nominee in Maryland's Fourth Congressional district.
"Like Donna Edwards, Adam Ortiz is a new kind of leader in Prince George's County," said John Reid, executive vice president of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, Maryland Division. "By putting people before politics, Adam Ortiz will be a fresh voice and a force for change on the County Council."
One of the key issues in this race is the longstanding crisis at Prince George's hospitals. Though Governor Martin O'Malley and Prince George's County leaders have announced a plan to fund the hospitals for two years while preparing the facilities for sale, it still needs to be enacted by the Maryland General Assembly and monitored to ensure that the process moves forward as planned and serves the patients, workers and community. 1199SEIU represents 1,700 workers at the facilities.
"I am honored to receive 1199SEIU's endorsement and appreciate their innovative approach to making a better quality of life for working people. My mother worked three jobs to keep our family afloat so I know the issues facing working families," said Ortiz. "I am looking forward to bringing our message of empowerment to the people of the 5th District and working together to save the Prince George's hospital."
"Adam Ortiz has been a great advocate for the hospitals and I know he will be a strong voice on the Prince George's County Council," said Michael Stanard, an environmental services worker at Prince George's Hospital Center. "We need leaders like him who will speak for us."

The Sierra Club, an environmental organization, interviewed the candidates in this District 5 race in Prince George's County.
We chose Adam Ortiz as he was the greenest of the competitors, and has history of being responsive to ordinary people. (Continued…)

Adam Ortiz was the first candidate we heard speaking publicly about his intentions -- Genuine intentions. Howell grand stands, but gave no support to his own community as a Homeowner's Association President. (Continued…)
